That single, lonely “M” on a wedding RSVP card has confused and embarrassed more guests than most etiquette rules ever could. It looks simple, but for many people, it sparks hesitation the moment they pick up a pen.
Some assume it stands for “Maybe,” while others think it relates to meal choices or guest numbers. The uncertainty can turn a small task into an awkward guessing game, especially when you do not want to make a mistake.
In reality, the meaning is far less complicated than it seems. The “M” is simply the first letter of a traditional courtesy title used in formal invitations.
Guests are expected to complete the title before writing their full name. For example, “Mr.”, “Mrs.”, “Ms.”, or “Miss” would follow naturally from that initial letter, depending on personal preference.
This tradition comes from older, more formal styles of correspondence. At a time when etiquette played a larger role in everyday communication, small details like this were considered standard and widely understood.
However, modern guests are not always familiar with these conventions. As a result, something meant to guide people can end up confusing them instead.
